Aixa Dones (Eye-eeks-uh Dōn-ez) graduated from Adler University with a Masters of Arts in Counseling with a Specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She completed her internship at North Park University where she gained exposure working with individuals who experienced hardships and trauma, battled eating disorders, and were part of the LGBTQ+ community. Aixa believes therapy is an opportunity to regain control of one’s life, as well as a chance to unlearn unhealthy behavior patterns and beliefs. Aixa welcomes her clients nonjudgmentally and strives to make the healing journey a “we process,” where her clients do not have to  process and recover from stressors alone. Aixa enjoys providing counseling services to individuals with anxiety, depression and/or relationship difficulties.

Meeting clients where they are, and being in the moment, is essential to Aixa. Her clients recognize Aixa’s efforts to show up, and embrace her authentic self and feel invited to do the same. In doing so, Aixa and her clients work together to overcome life’s challenges. Aixa values and integrates her diversity training - with an emphasis on the LGBTQ+ community - and is skilled in holding racially charged conversations, navigating platonic/familial/romantic relationships, anxiety, depression, self-confidence building, boundary setting, trauma, and generational/cultural trauma.

As a Hispanic (Puerto-Rican woman), Aixa uses her culture to make connections and help relate to clients experiencing discrimination, racial inequities, intersectional identities, and cultural and generational abuse/unhealthy behaviors. She highly values taking the time to heal oneself and the courage it takes to break generational trauma and patterns. With compassionate energy, she firmly believes that putting yourself first, even when doing so may be disruptive to relationships, is neither selfish or wrong–it’s one of the bravest and most powerful actions to do.

Aixa graduated with her Master’s Degree in Counseling with a Specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adler University and interned at North Park University as a university mental health counselor. She is excited to include these values in her career as a psychotherapist and looks forward to working with adults, young adults, and teens with multiple intersecting identities.
