Deema Soufan received her Bachelor of Science in political science and sociology at Illinois State University.  She then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Deema thoroughly enjoys working with pregnant women and mothers. Motherhood comes with its own unique set of challenges such as loss of one’s identity, work life balance, isolation, and guilt. Deema recognizes how hard it can be to feel the pressure of being the perfect mother, especially in a time where everything is on social media. Often times women do not share their personal struggles about motherhood with other moms out of fear of judgement. Deema creates a judgement-free space where women can speak openly about their experiences.

Deema also runs a blog focused on maternal mental health. Here, she discusses a variety of perinatal mood disorders, common challenges that arise in motherhood, and how to navigate motherhood, without losing one’s sense of self. Her inspiration for creating the blog came from realizing that there was a lack of writers utilizing empirically based evidence when discussing very real and clinically based topics.

Deema recognizes the importance of supporting marginalized patients and holds issues of diversity in the counseling process near and dear to her heart. She has spent much of her time traveling in the Middle East and working with refugees, thus furthering her experience working with diverse populations.

Deema trained at Concordia University where she worked with a variety of adults on issues such as complex trauma and work life balance. Deema also has experience working in private practice where she has counseled patients struggling with perinatal mood disorders, chronic medical conditions, anxiety, depression, trauma, sexuality, relationship issues. She has worked with individual adults, couples, and families. In addition, Deema also has experience performing neuropsychological assessments and neuropsychological reports.

When not providing therapy or working in the hospital setting, Deema has a passion for teaching. She loves helping students gain new perspectives on topics that they have never explored before. Deema’s students love her ability to connect with each of them and approach taboo topics with a non-judgmental demeanor.

Deema cares deeply about cultivating a relationship with her patients. From there she assists them in working through the challenges that they have faced so that they are able to take control of their biography. She does this by offering unconditional support while helping patients discover a new perspective that they may not have previously considered.

Deema creates a space for her patients where they are comfortable expressing their feelings, whether that is anger, fear, sadness, or joy. She will help you gain the skills necessary to process these feelings, where they come from, and why you may be experiencing them.

In her free time, Deema enjoys chasing after her children, catching up with friends and family, and curling up with a great book.
