Quarterly FOID Training

Mental health professionals in Illinois have a critical but often under-supported role when it comes to firearm safety. Under state law, we are required to report individuals who may be at risk of safely operating firearms to the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). However, most mental health providers receive little to no formal training on this process.

Resilience Psychological Services hosts members of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Division of Mental Health (DMH) Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Mental Health Reporting Team for an essential training series. This event is designed specifically for mental health professionals who want to better understand how to navigate the reporting process responsibly and ethically.

Why Attend?
This free training will provide:

  • Clear guidance on reporting requirements: Learn when and how to file reports with IDHS and understand your legal responsibilities related to mandatory reporting.

  • Technical support and guidance on utilizing the IDHS FOID Mental Health Reporting System: Learn how to navigate the system to submit a report.

  • Expert insights: Direct access to members of the IDHS FOID Mental Health Reporting Team who will answer your questions and provide information on the most frequently asked questions. and clarify complex reporting scenarios.

Why This Matters:
Ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals and communities involves making thoughtful, informed decisions about firearm ownership. By attending this training, you will gain the tools and knowledge to fulfill your role as a mental health professional. We also want to encourage all of our attendees and providers to consider ways in which you can assist in creating a fair and equitable system that respects the rights and safety of all individuals.*

*This training does not specifically address implicit bias and the understanding of how systemic bias disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, including Black and Brown individuals, who are more likely to be labeled as dangerous and face challenges in maintaining their firearm ownership rights.

* This training also does not provide education on restoring firearm ownership rights.
